Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting is required in all premises where people are employed or the public have access. Emergency Lighting Systems are designed to provide an independent light source to enable occupants of the building to escape during an emergency situation. Emergency Lighting is a mandatory requirement to be installed where artificial lighting is installed.

SPEC Building Services can design, install and maintain all types of emergency lighting systems, ensuring employers have peace of mind and are statutory compliant.

The design of an Emergency Lighting system is critical, illuminating escape routes in order to save lives. The British Standard provides the emergency lighting designer with laid down guide lines which form the general basis for the designer to work to. British Standard BS 5266: Part 1: 2005 includes in its scope residential hotels, clubs, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and colleges, licensed premises, offices, museums, shops, multi-storey dwellings etc.

Changes to the building layout such as partitioning can compromise the original design and should be considered prior to any project works.

Like all systems that employ electronic components to function properly, lack of planned maintenance can lead to failure – and ultimately disaster.

Emergency lighting testing involves the periodic test and inspection of all key components within the system.

This includes a functionality test of key switches, duration of batteries, luminaries and control equipment.

SPEC Building Services can produce a planned programme of work to ensure that your emergency lighting system performs in the way it was intended.
