They produce less heat and therefore consume less power, without flicker. In addition to a more environmentally friendly light, the use of LED shows a return on investment over the life of the product. Further more, fluorescent lamps contain harmful chemicals, which even when disposed of correctly have a potential to impact the environment.
Modern technology has made it possible to trap the power of the sun and store that power effectively.
